SciFi and Fantasy Art: Could Have Been A Father22nd December 2006 age 16 It's been a long time since I submitted anything!
This piece has been sitting there waiting to be finished for months now, and I have grown to detest parts of it with a passion. I just wanted it finished, so I did so (in a rather shoddy fashion; I do apologise) as I found time today at last. I love starting miserable pictures, I have all of these intentions for emotion, but I often tire of continuing with them - and this was no exception. What a brain sapper!
The winged man is yet another character of mine, a demon called Avarice, whose name is highly inappropriate, as he is unconventionally sweet. He took into his care the boy called Baron, who I would estimate was no more than fifteen or sixteen years old, but was determined to become a great warrior - a dream that was cut short as he was caught unawares by the demon character of a friend of mine, Shiv, and drowned in the river. Avarice got there too late, and forgives neither Shiv nor himself. I'd tell the story in a less matter-of-fact way if it weren't for the fact that I'm sick of the painting. =P The title, I hope, conveys some of my original ideas for emotion. It applies to both Avarice and Baron.
Anyway, I hope that you're all well, folks, and that you had a good New Year 2007 and all that!

I don't understand why you hate it that much 0.o Also the background fits the picture so good... Beautiful pic Emily 'Foxbane' Oldroyd replies: " Thank you so much! =DI don't dislike the picture quite so much now - I think it was just my initial frustration with it. =) Particularly delighted that you like the background - thank you again for your comment!"
| 10 Apr 2007 | Trisha W. Farnan | I am so amazed that you even have to doubt this picture at all. The background, I have to say, looks totally awesome. If that's what you were worried about, you can safely stop now. The emotion of the piece really is conveyed well. The figures are very well done. Your talent is extreme!! Emily 'Foxbane' Oldroyd replies: " That's such a sweet comment - and sorry I took so long to reply! Thank you very much for your kind words. " | |
| 1 Jun 2007 | Claudia Wijnants | I love the story behind this picture. The background is just stunning! The clouds with all the details... just amazing! This is a really good picture Emily 'Foxbane' Oldroyd replies: "Thank you very much indeed! I love pictures with stories. =)" | |
| 21 Jun 2007 | David Michael | First bit applies to all your pictures: You have awesome talent, and some really beautiful pics here. I like them all a lot. Very well done and inspired, I really hope you continue to do more pics and post them here on Elfwood. +) This one's also pretty good. I like the clouds in the back, and the tall brown grasses. I'd expect the dead boy's head to droop a bit more, though. And one etymological thingy: if Avarice is so good and sweet, why not just call him an angel? A demon by definition is the evil version of an angel, a fallen angel. So if he's good...you get the picture. Still a great pic though. I've enjoyed your gallery a lot. Emily 'Foxbane' Oldroyd replies: "Thank you very much for the kind comment! I'm aware of the boy's head not drooping enough, but I somehow managed to not change it - see, to begin with, Avarice's hand was supporting it. It was a big mistake but this piece rather demands an entire rework as opposed to such a correction and I'd rather move on. =) Thank you for the advice, anyway. As for Avarice being a demon - I enjoy toying with the idea of unlikely good and evil. I rarely treat my demons as fallen angels but rather a little race of their own - I have a fair few wingless demons and so on, and others that don't fit in appearance the 'opposite' of an angel. Using this device, I've been able to write about Avarice being scorned for and confused about what he is. =) Similarly, the friend I mention in my description in this piece has a character who is in all appearance an angel - and also in his speech - but he happens to be more like a demon in personality. Thus, he gives quite the wrong impression and uses it to his advantage. I enjoy things like that! =D " | |
| 5 Aug 2007 | Anonymous | this picture is beautiful, but sometimes the stances of the characters are unrealistic. For ex; the dead boys head should not be so stiff and upright cause hes you know...dead. Emily 'Foxbane' Oldroyd replies: "Yeah, I know =( I was gonna have Avarice's hand under his head to support it but for some reason it didn't work out and I'd rather move on than worry about trying to fix it xD But you're quite right" | |
